BRUNSWICK (WGME) -- A new mental health support center is now open in Brunswick.
A ribbon cutting event was held for the SupportME Peer Center Tuesday.
It's designed to help people with mental health and substance abuse challenges.
The nonprofit community mental health provider Sweetser is behind this center.
It's a peer-only space located in Sweetser's Hope and Healing Center, helping those on the Midcoast.
The center provides people experiencing mental health challenges, substance abuse challenges, trauma and life stress with walk-in peer support.
This includes participant-driven groups run by peers, one-on-one support with certified peer support specialists and engaging workshops on life skills topics.
The peers running the facility have been through similar experiences.
A big part of the center is there's no payment or insurance required to receive the support services.
The director of recovery services at Sweetser says the goal is to connect and help people who have similar experiences.
"It's an inclusive space, free of charge, kind of drop-in space where people can come and access community and connection, who have lived experience, so if they are experiencing some sort of mental health challenge, substance use, anything related to that, even life-interrupting trauma, they are welcome here," Sweetser Director of Recovery Services Alaina Knox said.
