Comet 3I/ATLAS has a huge size and an unusual orbit that is causing controversy among scientists. Some theories suggest that this could be a spaceship piloted by an extraterrestrial civilization.
Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered in July 2025, is the third object from outside the Solar System ever recorded by humans. Roughly the size of Manhattan Island, 3I/ATLAS quickly became the focus of attention in astronomy and the global media.
According to initial predictions, this comet will approach its closest point to the Sun in early November. However, what surprised scientists was not only its orbit, but also the unusual movements when flying close to planets such as Jupiter, Venus and Mars â" which are rare in ordinary comets.
In a conversation on the popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, billionaire Elon Musk â" the head of SpaceX and Tesla â" made a shocking comment. He suggested that the orbit of 3I/ATLAS does not entirely follow the laws of ordinary physics, and may be being affected by a force other than gravity.
Elon Musk also revealed that this object is almost entirely composed of nickel â" a rare metal in natural comets. Given its large mass and metallic construction, if 3I/ATLAS collides with Earth, the consequences could be continental-scale destruction. "It could be powerful enough to wipe out a continent... or worse." This statement prompted host Joe Rogan to exclaim: "If it collides, most of humanity will probably die."
Musk went on to analyze that the extent of the destruction will depend on the exact mass of the object. He recalled that in Earth's history, there have been at least five large-scale extinction events, including the Permian extinction â" which wiped out almost all life.
According to Musk, smaller collisions â" enough to destroy a continent â" don't leave a clear mark on the fossil record after hundreds of millions of years. He hypothesized that there may have been collisions that wiped out all life in a large part of North America, but that modern humans could not detect it.
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) initially asserted that 3I/ATLAS would fly about 170 million miles from Earth, without posing a direct threat. However, this reassurance was quickly shaken by new developments.
Professor Avi Loeb â" a renowned astrophysicist at Harvard University â" has published an article suggesting that the zero-gravity acceleration of 3I/ATLAS could be a sign of internal technology, like an engine. He also noted that the object is changing color, becoming brighter and bluer as it approaches the Sun â" a phenomenon that is inconsistent with the behavior of natural comets.
3I/ATLAS is more than just a strange object flying through the Solar System. It is challenging even the current scientific understanding of astronomy. Unusual orbits, near-nickel metal construction, zero-gravity acceleration, and color variation are factors that prevent scientists from drawing firm conclusions.
Until now, NASA has insisted there is no risk of a collision. Elon Musk warned of the possibility of destruction. A Harvard scientist suspects that there is control technology inside. What the truth is â" no one can confirm yet.
But one thing is clear: the world is watching every move of 3I/ATLAS. And if it is indeed a spacecraft, humanity may be on the verge of a moment of permanent historical change.
