SANATQUIN, Utah (ABC4) -- The Santaquin Post Office is one step closer to being renamed the Sgt. Bill Hooser Post Office Building in honor of the fallen Santaquin police officer.
Hooser tragically lost his life in the line of duty on May 5, 2024, when he was struck by a semi-truck as the driver attempted to flee the scene of a traffic stop. Shortly after his death, Utah Rep. Burgess Owens, along with the rest of the Utah House Delegation, introduced a bill to rename the post office.
That bill passed through the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, Dec. 4. It will now go to the Senate.
"Today, the People's House came together to honor a true Utah hero, Sgt. Bill Hooser, paying tribute to a life defined by service and the ultimate sacrifice he made to protect our community," said Owens. "The Sgt. Bill Hooser Post Office Building will serve as a lasting testament to his courage and dedication."
Hooser, a Utah native, served in law enforcement for eight years before his death starting in New Mexico with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. In February 2024, Hooser's work earned a promotion from Corporal to Sergeant. At the time of his death, his younger brother, Mike Hooser, said Sgt. Hooser died a hero doing what he loved and serving the people he loved.
Michael Aaron Jayne, the 42-year-old man allegedly behind the wheel of the semi-truck that killed Hooser., faces several charges including aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.
A preliminary hearing for Jayne has been scheduled for May 12, 2025, more than one year after Hooser's death.
