A North Yorkshire care home team turned an outdoor space into a haven for one resident's beloved gnomes.

The project began after staff at Mount Vale Care Home in Northallerton noticed resident Margaret was struggling to settle in.

It turned out she was missing the garden gnomes she had collected over the years.

Trudi Gillespie, general manager at Mount Vale, said: "There is no doubt that integrating some of Margaret's favourite friends into our garden here at Mount Vale has had a huge impact on her emotional wellbeing.

"I am absolutely delighted that we were able to do that for her.

"Our team is so incredibly caring and they go above and beyond for our residents every day.

"I'm always very proud of all of them, but I want to say an extra special thank you to Shaun who led this project."

Led by the home's head of maintenance Shaun Van Der Merwe, the care team created a dedicated outdoor space for her.

They cleared an area directly outside Margaret's bedroom window so she could easily see and enjoy the display.

The collection was reimagined with the help of the care home's administrator Sarah, who donated gnomes to help rebuild Margaret's treasured collection.

A wildlife area was also added to attract birds, butterflies, and other creatures to make the garden even more enjoyable.

The gnome garden has become a source of comfort for Margaret, who now has a daily reminder of home and the opportunity to interact with her garden.

Mount Vale Care Home is operated by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK's largest care providers.

It offers nursing, residential, and respite care on both a short and long-term basis.
