WARREN COUNTY, Ky. - It started with a trip to chemotherapy, and now a simple idea is making cancer easier for dozens in Kentucky.
Warren East High School art teacher Andrea Brown was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and after a few visits to her chemo treatments, she noticed that it was an uncomfortable experience for many around her. Brown then decided to ask Jamisen Henley who teaches Family & Consumer Sciences if her class could assist with what they do every day anyway.
Three students revved up their sewing machines to help not only Brown but other patients as well, so far they've made dozens of shirts and delivered by hand and mail. The students who are part of Family, Career and Career Leaders of America applied for a grant from FCCLA to help provide the shirts for free and they've been a hit with the students' family, family friends and others in the state.
Avery Gidcumb, Taylor Mills and Jamie Phelps took the idea to national leadership program, Lead 4 Change, to hopefully make an even bigger impact and shot a documentary with the organization just a few weeks ago.
The girls said it's such a rewarding feeling for them as is Brown, who said helping to catalyze this project has given her newer sense of purpose as dealing with cancer can at times strip that away.
