AVON LAKE, Ohio - A food drive by children at Erieview Elementary School collected more than 4,300 items of food to help those in need.
The outreach group Erieview Kids in the Community - with members from kindergarten to fourth grade - collected the 3,809 pounds of food last month which has been donated to the Avon and Avon Lake Community Resource Services.
A statement said: "The group meets throughout the school year and its goal is to teach students to be kind, helpful citizens while providing opportunities to serve the greater community. The group is led by Erieview Elementary music teacher and choir director Kathy Walker and teacher Patricia Forte."
"This outreach involved students in each class contributing donations to the food drive and tallying up the donations by classroom. The classes kept tally by tens and a paper turkey was posted for each increment inside the walls of the school building."
"Thank you to the entire Erieview Elementary community including students, parents, and staff for their hard work and incredible generosity on behalf of the Avon and Avon Lake communities."
The class that gathered the most donations got to cover their principal in silly string, and third and fourth graders loaded the nearly-two tons of food onto a truck and took a field trip to onload and organize food at the pantry.
Youngsters enjoy literacy at Eastview Elementary School
AVON LAKE, Ohio - A special literacy event at Eastview Elementary School attracted more than 80 families keen to find out more about the importance of reading.
The event called Fall into Literacy took place last month and featured valuable literacy resources along with treats and a raffle.
Lorain County Educational Service Center literacy specialist Olivia Weisman was on hand to guide families through the importance of reading at home and engaging with children at all reading levels.
