Stones striker Josh makes his move

Josh Redfearn has shown his commitment to Maidstone United by moving to the town.

Redfearn, a summer signing from Welling, has relocated from London to be close to the Gallagher Stadium for training.

The striker, born in the UK but raised in New Zealand, scored his first Stones goal in a 3-3 draw at Worthing on Saturday.

His injury-time effort, after coming off the bench, looked set to be the winner, only for the hosts to level immediately.

He was rewarded with a start at Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday night, although Maidstone lost 3-0.

Redfearn hopes to feel the benefits from moving to the county town.

"I've only been in London or the UK for nearly a year, so I've been back and forth between a few places," he said.

"It's better if you can be nice and close to your team.

"I've only been there for a few days now and just getting to training with time to spare is a lot better and more convenient than coming from London."

Redfearn came in for Deon Moore at Weston, the big man given a rest after a busy start to the season.

The competition should bring out the best in each other, while on-loan Charlton striker Patrick Casey is another option in the centre-foward role.

"Deon is good competition," said Redfearn.

"He does the striker role really well, so I can learn a lot from him. And I guess, naturally, you've got to be competitive, so you've got to keep him on his toes."

Redfearn is learning the English game after plying his trade in New Zealand and Australia before returning to the UK.

The spell at Welling gave him an insight and he's continuing his education with Maidstone.

"I think here, in England, it's just a lot faster and direct, and physical, whereas in New Zealand and Australia, in the leagues I was playing in, you try to play, but I think it's maybe a little bit slower," said Redfearn.

"So, coming here, it's a good change of pace.

"Welling was a good first test for me, my first experience in English football, and a good primer to come to Maidstone.

"It's been good here. Training's intense and the environment is really good. We've just got to learn as we go."

Redfearn won't forget his first Maidstone goal in a hurry.

They were under the cosh at Worthing after squandering a 2-0 lead and holding on for a point when Redfearn went through and scored, triggering big celebrations.

Seconds later, it all fell flat as the Rebels made it 3-3.

"I'm happy to get a goal for myself and for the team but, unfortunately, we didn't end up getting three points, so it's a little disappointing," said Redfearn.

"It's always a good feeling, getting a goal. It's one of the best feelings and it's my first goal for Maidstone."

Maidstone, 12th in National League South after their first defeat, host newly-promoted Horsham this Saturday (3pm), a club who knocked them out of last season's FA Trophy.
