Wildfires limit recreation in the Teanaway and near Bumping Lake

The Labor Mountain Fire in the Teanaway and the Wildcat Fire near Bumping Lake have closed some popular fall recreation spots.

Among the trail closures: The Esmeralda Basin in the Teanaway and Naches Peak Trail in Mount Rainier National Park. Both are often listed on "favorite fall hikes in Washington" lists.

Trails, roads and campgrounds in the fire areas are closed. Beyond those closure areas, smoke is affecting recreation in the Teanaway and along the State Route 410 corridor.

Labor Mountain

The Labor Mountain Fire was started by lightning Sept. 1 in the Standup and Stafford Creek drainages about 10 miles from Cle Elum. The fire was 5,643 acres as of Wednesday and 7% contained.

"As containment increases, we appreciate the public's continued support in avoiding active wildfire areas and observing National Forest closures," a Wednesday update from the firefighting team said. "With the onset of high hunt and grouse hunting season, hunters and recreationalists visiting the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest are strongly advised to stay informed about wildfire-related forest closures."

Labor Mountain Fire trail closures cover Iron Bear, Stafford Creek, Teanaway Ridge, Standup Creek, Miller Peak, Bean Creek, County Line, Beverly Turnpike, Long's Pass, Ingalls Way, Iron Peak, Esmeralda Basin, Boulder-De Roux, Koppen Mountain, Johnson Medra, Jungle Creek, Way Creek, Entienne Creek, Three Brother, Falls Creek, Cascade Creek, Hardscrabble Creek and Ingalls Creek. In addition, the 29 Pines Campground and Dickey Creek day use area are closed.

Road closures include Blue Creek, Stafford Creek, Standup Creek, Iron Creek, Hovey Creek, Old Blewett Highway, North Fork Teanaway, Jungle Creek, Jack Creek and Beverly Creek.

Wildcat Fire

Road and trail closures continue in the Bumping Lake area because of the Wildcat Fire, which was started by lightning Aug. 25. As of Wednesday morning, the fire stood at 8,415 acres and 8% containment, according to an official incident report. About 340 personnel are assigned to the fire.

The Naches Peak and Shriner Peak trails in Mount Rainier National Park are closed, as well as trailheads on State Route 123 between Cayuse Pass and Stevens Canyon Road, according to the park service. The fire is east of the park.

State Route 410 is open. Access on State Route 123 in the national park between Cayuse and Stevens Canyon Road is temporarily closed due to a construction project.

The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from the intersection of Bumping Lake Trail to the Chinook Pass Trailhead at State Route 410. The Bumping River Road is closed at the junction with SR 410, though it remains open to residents of Goose Prairie. The Upper and Lower Bumping Lake campgrounds are closed, along with the boat launch.

The Pleasant Valley Trail within the William O. Douglas Wilderness is closed, as are American Ridge, Mesatchee Creek, and parts of the Mt. Aix and Indian Creek trails. Check the closure order for the full list.
