A young woman has died and a man has been rushed to hospital after being mauled by a shark at Crowdy Bay on New South Wales' Mid North Coast.

Emergency services arrived to the beach shortly before 6.30am upon reports two swimmers were mauled by a shark. He was then airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. Police are working to notify the woman's next of kin. Crowdy Bay National Park, near Port Macquarie. Image: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Steven Pearce, from Surf Lifesaving NSW, said "the information we have... tragically one young female has been fatally killed by a shark". "The Department of Primary Industries are sending all their teams up there now and it is quite remote the location as we are sending up all our drone surveillance teams to support DPI and police who will be coordinating that scene," he said. "This area is so remote, there's no lifeguarding services up there at all." All beach access is closed between Crowdy Bay and Kylies Beach, with the entrance road closed in both directions as at 9.30am.
