Wilkes University baseball team dropped two games in its season opener Sunday.
Heading to Virginia for the weekend, the Colonels were swept by Shenandoah University, 6-5 and 10-3, at Bridgeforth Stadium. Shenandoah is 4-0 after sweeping Misericordia on Friday.
In Game 1, Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and rallied to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth on a Zack Luksic single. But the hosts scoring the winning run on a hit-batsman with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Jack Mathis went 2 for 3 with two runs, while Luksic and Chase Vrabel had the other two Colonels hits. Sal Colello suffered the loss in relief. A.J. Levandoski got the start, allowing four runs in two innings with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, the Hornets scored runs in each inning en route to the seven-run win. Wilkes managed just three hits as Luke Spencer had a double. Luksic and Jaocb Cambria added singles in the setback. Starter Zach Lloyd allowed two runs, and walked four in less than an inning.
Wilkes (0-2) is back in action Saturday at Bruggeworth Field against SUNY Cobleskill.
