Lawmakers honor enslaved craftspeople who helped build Tennessee State Capitol

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - As black history month comes to a close Friday, Tennessee lawmakers are honoring the people who constructed the building where they work.

On Thursday, lawmakers honored the enslaved craftspeople who helped build the State Capitol. They passed a house resolution to recognize the enslaved men for their hard work that included breaking and carting away heavy amounts of limestone and dirt.

Representative Justin Jones says he's happy the resolution had such bipartisan support.

"This is history that we can't deny. And it's not about shaming them, it's about shining light. These are men who should be honored. These are people who literally their sweat and blood is in this building that we walk in everyday, this building of democracy," Jones said.

Jones said the next step is to get a monument or memorial placed in the capitol. They will have to file a bill, and it will have to go through the legislative process.
