Bessent Says Looking Forward to Working Closely With BOJ's Ueda

(Bloomberg) -- US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is looking forward to working closely and productively with Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda, according to a Treasury readout after the two held a virtual introductory call.

The meeting came as Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to travel to Washington for his first meeting as premier with President Donald Trump.

The US administration has been relatively quiet on Japan since Trump returned to the White House last month. The readout referred to shared macroeconomic and financial priorities without elaboration.

In February 2024, when he was leading macro firm Key Square Capital Management, Bessent correctly predicted Japan's central bank would lift interest rates - a step it undertook in the following month. Bessent was of the view a rate hike would boost Japan's economy, push up its stocks and strengthen the yen.
