The former Astros third baseman has agreed to a contract with the Red Sox, The Athletic's Chandler Rome first reported. Boston was one of the several teams that were reportedly in on him all offseason, along with the Tigers, Cubs and his former home in Houston.
Bregman spent the past nine years with the Astros, helping Houston win two World Series titles in that span. The veteran made two All-Star games and is coming off a season where he had 26 home runs and won his first Gold Glove.
With the addition, Bregman will join a revamped Boston team headlined by Rafael Devers. It is unclear which of Devers or Bregman will play third, but Bregman also has some experience playing in the middle infield.
Bregman's contract with the Red Sox is a three-year, $120 million deal with opt outs after both of the first two seasons, Rome reported. The deal is similar to many contracts that Scott Boras negotiated over the past few seasons, giving the player the option to re-enter the free agent market sooner rather than later.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Bregman's deal includes deferred money, but the $40 million in AAV is at least $10 million more than the next best offers. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports Bregman had several offers of six years and at least $170 million, which comes in at under $30 million per season.
