'Anora,' 'I Saw the TV Glow' Lead Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominees - MyNewsLA.com

The romantic comedy Oscar front-runner "Anora" and the horror film "I Saw the TV Glow" will each carry a leading six nominations into Saturday's presentation of the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards, which honor the best independent film productions from the past year.

Both are nominated for best feature film, along with "Nickel Boys," "Sing Sing" and "The Substance."

Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore is nominated for best lead performance for her work in "The Substance," portraying an aging actress who takes a black-market drug to create a younger version of herself. Also nominated in the category are Amy Adams for "Nightbitch," Ryan Destiny for "The Fire Inside," Colman Domingo for "Sing Sing," Keith Kupferer for "Ghostlight," Mikey Madison for "Anora," Hunter Schafer for "Cuckoo," Justice Smith for "I Saw the TV Glow," June Squibb for "Thelma" and Sebastian Stan for "The Apprentice."

Meanwhile, FX's "Shogun" -- which set a record last year by winning a staggering 18 Emmy Awards -- is the leading Spirit Award nominee in the television categories with five nods. "Baby Reindeer" and "English Teacher" each have four nominations.

All three are nominated for best new scripted series, along with "Diarra From Detroit" and "Fantasmas."

"This year's inspiring group of Spirit Award nominated artists show the essential nature of independent art being produced today," Brenda Robinson, chair of the Board of Directors for Film Independent, said in a statement. "Through their dedication, bravery and unique voices they have created indelible works that will be celebrated for years to come, and we're honored to be supporting them on that journey."

The Film Independent Spirit Awards will be presented during an afternoon ceremony in a tent at the beach in Santa Monica. The ceremony will be hosted for the second year in a row by "Saturday Night Live" alum Aidy Bryant.

Actress and "Saturday Night Live" alum Molly Shannon will be the "honorary chair," a position given each year "to an individual who exemplifies outstanding artistic achievement and embodies Film Independent's mission."

Among those expected to serve as presenters during the ceremony are Tadanobu Asano, Carrie Coon, Danielle Deadwyler, Mark and Jay Duplass, Walton Goggins, Kathryn Hahn, Alana Haim, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Patti LuPone, Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ruth Negga, Karen Pittman, Questlove, Edgar Ramirez, Hunter Schafer, Randy & Jason Sklar, Julio Torres, Jessica Williams and Michelle Yeoh.
