Freeze watch to take effect for much of southeast Louisiana ahead of fall cold front

A freeze watch will be in effect for much of southeast Louisiana Monday evening ahead of a fall cold front that's expected to slash temperatures across the region.

National Weather Service forecasters expect the cold front to move through south Louisiana Sunday, bringing gusty winds and overnight lows that will likely dip into the mid-30s and 40s. While some parts of the northshore, including Slidell, could see freezing conditions Sunday night, the coldest temperatures are expected overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning.

The freeze watch will go into effect Monday evening across the northshore, Baton Rouge, St. John and St. Charles parishes, and parts of Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes. A freeze watch is issued when temperatures are expected to drop to 32 degrees or lower.

Temperatures could dip as low as 25 degrees in areas along and north of Interstate 12, while portions of the river parishes and West Bank could see temperatures as low as 30 degrees, according to the NWS. Freezing wind chills are expected both Sunday and Monday night.

Forecasters said freezing temperatures could last for around 3-8 hours Monday night along I-12 and up to 3 hours in the river and bayou parishes. Sensitive plants and pets will need protection, NWS forecasters warned.
