Jess Wilson makes huge call in new Vic shadow cabinet announcement

Jess Wilson has taken a major risk in the selection of her new shadow cabinet, announcing she will take on both the roles of Opposition leader and shadow treasurer.

The new Victorian Liberal leader announced her new shadow cabinet in a joint statement with Nationals leader Danny O'Brien on Sunday, with the pair claiming the new team reflects all walks of life and draws on the breadth of experience, passion and knowledge across the two parties.

Ms Wilson's decision to hold both the opposition leader and shadow treasurer roles is a high risk move. It will give the new Liberal leader greater control over the Coalition's election pitch, which some have viewed as overly focused on crime. But with this comes greater accountability for the success or failure at the next election, as well as a significantly increased workload for the first-term MP.

The announcement comes just two weeks after the party voted to dump former leader Brad Battin in favour of Ms Wilson, who only entered parliament as the member for Kew at the last election.

The party's outgoing leader will remain on the front bench, having been appointed shadow police and corrections minister - a role he held prior to becoming leader in December last year.

Ms Wilson has also declined to promote controversial former leader John Pesutto, despite the Hawthorn MP having sought a return to the frontbench.

Moira Deeming, whose successful defamation battle against Mr Pesutto ultimately destroyed his leadership, will retain her role of shadow assistant minister for local government.

The same cannot be said for Battin ally and close confidante Richard Riordan, who has been dumped from the frontbench entirely.

Mr Riordan's former portfolio's have been split between Caulfield MP David Southwick and deputy Liberal leader Sam Groth.

Having lost his police, corrections and crime prevention roles, Mr Southwick will now become shadow minister for planning and shadow minister for housing and building.

While Mr Groth drops public transport, ports and freight, and aviation portfolios and becomes shadow minister for tourism, sport and major events; and shadow minister for trade and investment.

Other major winners in the reshuffle include conservative upper house MP Renee Heath, who has been promoted off the backbench and given the roles of shadow minister for youth justice, and shadow minister for crime prevention and victim support. She has also taken on the role of Bay protection.

Sandringham MP and Wilson ally Brad Rowswell has also been given the higher profile role of shadow education minister, as well as shadow minister for industrial relations. He also retained the role of shadow minister for government services.

His former role of shadow minister for small business will now be taken on by new upper house Liberal leader Bev McArthur - a western Victoria region MP who's decision to remove her support from Mr Battin played a key role in his downfall. Ms McCarthur will also take on the role of shadow minister for local government.

Other changes include deputy upper house Liberal Evan Mulholland swapping the education portfolio for the transport infrastructure, while retaining the multicultural and multifaith affairs portfolio.

Matthew Guy, another former Liberal opposition leader, will take on the role of shadow minister for public transport - an area likely to be key to the Allan government's re-election pitch - as well as shadow minister for ports and freight.

Shadow health minister Georgie Crozier, another veteran MP, will add the Ambulance Services and Medical research portfolios to her role.

The Liberal and National party leaders said the goal of the new team would be to develop and articulate tangible policy solutions to the pressing issues holding back the state.

"With 12 months until the next election, my team is fully focused on the task ahead and will work every day to present a credible and optimistic alternative that Victorians want to vote for," Ms Wilson said.

"Our priorities are clear and focused on the most pressing issues facing Victorians today: we will get our finances under control, end the crime crisis, deliver a world-class health system and ensure every Victorian has the best opportunity to own their own home."

Nationals leader Danny O'Brien said the new team would "provide the genuine alternative that Victorians are crying out for."

"Regional Victoria has been ignored for too long by this Labor Government and the Liberals and Nationals will ensure we truly govern for the whole state and that regional Victoria gets its fair share," he said.
