765874 - UNIFICATION (2024) Short Film: STAR TREK's Emotional Goodbye to Kirk & Spock

Jules Urbach wrote the screenplay for 765874 - Unification. William Shatner, Susan Nimoy, and Jules Urbach executive produced the short film. The film was developed by OTOY.

"Urbach also noted that many fans were frustrated with how Kirk died in Generations, and although he thought the scene in Star Trek Beyond when Zachary Quinto's Spock was notified of Spock Prime's passing was "beautiful," the death of the character happened offscreen. How these deaths were handled was a key motivation for the creation of "Unification," [Jules] Urbach explains:

'The point of this, emotionally, is we give them a proper sendoff. It was horrible that they died in separate universes... So, we thought: do we dare do this? And everyone was okay with this, from Shatner to the Nimoys to Paramount. Then it felt like something we should get as fans, as people that love these characters, as closure... And it makes sense from the characters' perspective that they would connect, and we have given at least two ways for that to be possible.'"

On Short Films

"A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term.

Short films are a typical first stage for new filmmakers, but professional actors and crews often still choose to create short films as an alternative form of expression.

Amateur filmmaking has grown in popularity as equipment has become more accessible. The lower production costs of short films often mean that short films can cover alternative subject matter as compared to higher budget feature films. Similarly, unconventional filmmaking techniques such as Pixilation or narratives that are told without dialogue, are more often seen in short films than features."
