MONTREAL, Quebec -- Obviously lines and defensive pairings can change from game to game and even shift to shift. But the first day of practice at the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off gave some indication of where the Bruins players are likely to line up once the event begins on Wednesday.
On a Canada squad that's loaded at forward, Brad Marchand is set to play on the third line with Seth Jarvis and Brayden Point. The top two lines for Team Canada will be Connor McDavid with Mitch Marner and Sam Reinhart followed by Sidney Crosby with Nathan MacKinnon and Mark Stone.
Marchand told NHL.com he didn't care where he played.
"I'm just so thrilled to be part of the team," he said. I don't care if I fill water bottles the whole tournament. I'm just happy to be there."
For the Americans, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was paired with Columbus' Zach Werenski on the second defense pair behind Jaccob Slavin and Adam Fox.
Connor Hellebuyck is expected to be Team USA's No. 1 goalie, but that doesn't matter early. Mike Sullivan could give Jake Oettinger and/or Jeremy Swayman time in the first two games (Thursday vs. Finland, and Saturday vs. Canada and save Hellebuyck for the semifinals and final in Boston.
Elias Lindholm looks like he'll be deployed as a checker/shutdown forward for Sweden, a role where he's found more success in a down year offensively.
He practiced on the fourth line with Viktor Arvidsson and Gustav Nyquist.
Lindholm and Marchand, who are linemates in Boston, will face each other on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
