Honolulu police have identified the 31-year-old man who fatally shot himself after shooting his 24-year-old former roommate in an Ewa Beach parking lot Tuesday night as Brandon Yadao.
The Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner said Yadao died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and ruled his death a suicide.
The victim, Francesca Kelso, was leaving her job as a pool attendant at Kapilina Beach Homes when she was shot multiple times in the leg and torso, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family.
"Investigators met with the victim, who is recovering and was last reported in serious condition as of last night," the Honolulu Police Department said in a statement this morning. "The investigation revealed that the victim and suspect were former roommates. It was reported that the two did not see eye to eye on certain issues."
Police said the case is not being classified as domestic violence-related and that the investigation remains ongoing.
Officers responded to reports of an argument just after 8:05 p.m. Tuesday at a residence on the 5100 block of Iroquois Avenue in the Kapilina Beach Homes complex. The dispute between Yadao and Kelso escalated, police said, and Yadao allegedly opened fire as Kelso was leaving work.
Kelso suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services personnel before being taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
After the shooting, police said, Yadao retreated to his vehicle, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
