Michigan coach relieved of duties after 9-3 season, OSU loss

Ohio State Buckeyes mascot Brutus celebrates following the NCAA football game against the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Nov. 29, 2025. Ohio State won 27-9.

The Michigan Wolverines were the most consistent program in the country under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, who also quarterbacked for the Wolverines back in his day, had the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff and defeated their rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes, every year at the end of his tenure.

Then, after winning the national championship with future first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, Harbaugh left to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, and Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore assumed the mantle.

Unfortunately, Harbaugh's shoes may have been too big to fill.

In Moore's first season, the Wolverines went a paltry 7-5 in the regular season, in a year that was partially saved by a shocking road upset of the Buckeyes to cap things off. This year, Moore's second at the helm, Michigan improved its record to 9-3, but was outclassed in its biggest games, and this time, fell in embarrassing fashion to the Buckeyes, failing to score a single touchdown.

Now, there are major changes coming to the Wolverines' coaching staff.

"Source: Michigan has dismissed special teams coach JB Brown. He'd been Michigan's special teams coach the past two seasons and has been at the school for five total years in various roles," ESPN's senior college football insider, Pete Thamel, reported.

It's clear that Moore and the Wolverines are prepared to cut bait when things aren't working out, as Michigan's special teams have underperformed in the last two seasons, but it'll be interesting to see if more sweeping changes are necessary.

It's still too early to say that Moore doesn't have what it takes to lead Michigan back to the top of the sport, but if he doesn't figure it out soon, he may be the next coach let go.
