Man convicted of vandalizing ICU room at Adventist Health Tehachapi, faces up to 6 years

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- A man was convicted on Thursday of felony vandalism charges at Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley Hospital, as prosecutors said he destroyed an ICU room, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

The Kern County District Attorney said on April 21, 2023, Matthew Schapiro, a patient in the ICU, was said to be causing a disturbance and police responded.

Schapiro was seen by officers screaming and destroying the ICU room. Prosecutors said he broke a dual pane window, pictures on the walls, and medical equipment. He also destroyed a hospital bed by forcing and breaking the rails off. Schapiro urinated on the walls of the room.

In all, the damages were in the thousands to the hospital. He was arrested after officers were able to access the room.

"Hospital staff play a crucial role in protecting and caring for critical patients," stated Kern DA Cynthia Zimmer "While they dedicated themselves to this vital work, Schapiro's actions intervened by posing a danger to everyone around him. Such behavior is unacceptable and warrants legal consequences."

He was acquitted on three charges related to resisting arrest, according to court documents. Charges related to using/under the influence of a controlled substance were dismissed.

Schapiro is set to be sentenced on February 21, 2025. He faces up to six years in prison.
