Jaremy Smith shot Pee Dee paramedic 'execution-style,' could face more federal charges, documents reveal

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- By the time Jaremy Smith's violent, cross-country crime spree ended with his March 15 arrest in Albuquerque, New Mexico South Carolina investigators were nearly certain the Marion man killed a beloved Pee Dee paramedic who disappeared two days earlier.

GPS data from Phonesia Machado-Fore's stolen white BMW along with witness statements placing Smith at her Marion County home hours before her body was found behind an abandoned Nichols residence gave investigators a clear path to follow.

What authorities believe began as an attempt to steal guns from her home escalated into the killings of Machado-Fore and New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare.

Those revelations -- along with disturbing details of Machado-Fore's final moments -- are included in an unsealed federal search warrant request filed Jan. 29 in U.S. District Court's New Mexico District by an FBI agent investigating Smith's Palmetto State crimes.

News13 obtained a copy of the 13-page document on Tuesday. Smith, 33, is already facing life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty last month to killing Hare on March 15.

Despite winning a plea deal there, authorities said Smith would still answer for his crimes in South Carolina, where he faces 17 charges tied to Machado-Fore's death. The search warrant is for access to oral DNA swabs and fingerprints, and suggests he could face federal carjacking and kidnapping charges tied to Machado-Fore's death.

Marion County authorities declined to comment Tuesday about the federal investigation.

An 'execution-style' killing

On March 14, Marion County deputies were sent to Machado-Fore's Wildwood Loop home for a missing person's report after her husband told authorities he hadn't seen her for two days.

Machado-Fore's roommate said the white BMW was in their driveway at 6:30 a.m. the morning before. By noon, the car was half a mile away and then by 2 p.m. it was at a Jones Drive home in Nichols -- the same place Machado-Fore's body was discovered on March 15.

South Carolina authorities and the FBI that same day learned Machado-Fore's vehicle was involved in the deadly roadside ambush that Smith orchestrated on Interstate 40 in New Mexico -- an encounter that claimed Hare's life.

Machado-Fore was found face down dressed in bed clothing and house slippers -- the clothing pulled up over head, according to the search warrant. She was found with facial injuries and a dog shock collar around her neck.

Cut plastic zip ties were next to her, and her face was wrapped in "blood-soaked bandanas" with plastic tape around her mouth and chin, authorities said -- a single bullet wound to the back of her head.

The BMW's GPS data says it was only at the body's location for three minutes.

"Agents believe Smith abducted and restrained (Machado-Fore) near her residence at 10 a.m., transported her alive in the BMW to the body location, had her walk into the woods, then shot her once in the back of the head execution-style," the search warrant says.

A motive revealed

An unnamed associate of Smith's who got out of jail on March 13 told authorities Smith approached him that same day while driving a white BMW. Smith asked the person if they wanted a ride to Atlanta and after the person agreed, they parked near Machado-Fore's home and walked to her house.

After entering through a sliding glass door, they took six guns that were later sold. After that, Smith allegedly conducted an armed robbery in Effingham.

"After the armed robbery, the (unnamed associate) rode in the BMW with Smith from South Carolina to Texas. Along the way, (unnamed associate) indicated Smith displayed a handgun, became disrespectful and threatened to kill him," the search warrant says.

The unnamed associate refused to get back into the BMW after it stopped at a Texas gas station.

Smith is currently being housed at the maximum-security Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe County.
