The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly planning to release wide receiver Christian Kirk, according to ESPN. So what does this move do for the team's salary cap situation this offseason?
Kirk was entering the final year of his original four-year contract with the Jagaurs. He was due a base salary of $15.5 million, according to Over the Cap, and came with a salary cap hit of $24.08 million--the largest on the team.
While moving on from Kirk still leaves behind a dead cap hit of $13.65 million--or money that remains on the books even with Kirk playing elsewhere--the net result of releasing him is that the Jaguars save $10.43 million in cap space this season.
Prior to the move, Over the Cap projected that the Jaguars had $37.98 million in available salary cap space. Now, Jacksonville will have roughly $49.4 million in space. This moves them from ranking 17th in available salary cap space to 14th, just behind Tennessee.
This move obviously gives the Jaguars a fair amount more flexibility when it comes to spending power this offseason.
Recently, an AFC Scout spoke with Jaguars on Sports Illustrated at the NFL combine and mentioned guard and the secondary as two positions to watch for the Jaguars once free agency begins.
General manager James Gladstone has also made it known that the Jaguars will prioritize the trenches on both sides of the football this offseason as well.
