Enugu NMA Declares Support For Striking Resident Doctors - The Whistler Newspaper

The Enugu State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association has thrown its weight behind the ongoing nationwide strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD. It blamed the federal government's complacency for industrial action.

The position of the state chapter was contained in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Ndiokwelu Chibuzo, and General Secretary Dr Agbo Chukwuemeka. According to the wing, the strike would have been avoided if the federal government had responded within the 30-day ultimatum earlier issued by NARD.

Quoting the release, "The indefinite strike action was avoidable if the government had acted within the 30-day window provided by the NARD in an earlier ultimatum. Sadly, the inaction of the government led to the present situation where the resident doctors have now downed tools in a total and comprehensive action."

The NMA, the Enugu branch, expressed solidarity with all resident doctors across the state and the country. It stated that their demands were justified and aimed at improving Nigeria's healthcare system.

According to the chapter, "Your fight is absolutely justified, and for this reason, you can count on our total support and solidarity. It is a fight not just for your welfare but for the health system in Nigeria."

Enugu chapter called on resident doctors to remain firm in their demand until the government addressed their grievances.
