Quiksilver Athlete Griffin Colapinto Tells BroBible About His Biggest 'Holy S---' Moment In Surfing (Interview)

The 2025 WSL Championship Tour kicks off today with the Lexus Pipe Pro in Oahu, Hawaii and Griffin Colapinto, the current #2 ranked men's surfer in the world, will be seeking to improve upon his 9th place finish last year at the event. Griffin Colapinto, a Quiksilver athlete, ended up having an incredible 2024 WSL season with wins at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal and Corona Fiji Pro and he recently spoke with BroBible about what life is like as one of the top surfers in the world.

On the eve of the event, Griffin Colapinto was gracious enough to answer our questions about what his days look like when he's out side of the water, how he trains for the biggest events, his favorite places to surfer, his biggest 'holy s -- ' moment in surfing, having his own signature collection with Quiksilver, and more. So let's get to it!

BroBible: What do your personal goals look like this season and how do you think you can achieve them without leaving too much up to getting some lucky waves in the lineups?

Griffin: "Just being the most present I've ever been and in the moment on a day-to-day basis. Outside of that, in the competitive side of things, would be the World Title. I've had that on my goal list for the past two or three years, so I've come pretty close and just missed it. Winning three championship tour events is on the list. And just to have as much fun as I can."

BroBible: "What does a typical day for you look like when you're not surfing?"

Griffin: "I really enjoy golfing, so I'll go golf and hang out with friends, sauna, ice bath, meditate, journal."

BroBible: "What does the day look like when you're training for specific events?"

Griffin: "I start every day with a meditation and then I'll either surf or train depending on the waves. I do Pilates mostly for my training and also some weightlifting. From there, maybe I'll go to the driving range and practice some golf and then try and surf again, then finish it off with a sauna, ice bath and a good dinner."

BroBible: "Are there San Clemente surfers you look up to, like Marl Long or any other legends from the area?"

Griffin Colapinto: "Yea, there are a lot of guys from San Clemente I look up to like Kolohe Andino. He's about five years older than me. He's one of the prodigies coming up in the surf world and he had all the big sponsors and was one of the guys that kind of paved the way for making it big in San Clemente."

"Also the Gudauskas brothers. Those guys are just always super positive and had a really good perspective on life. I really like those guys."

BroBible: "What was it like in 2022 breaking through with 2 wins after finishing 3rd six times? Did anything change in your approach to competition after that?"

Griffin Colapinto: "Yea, it was pretty cool. I want to say that was my fourth year on tour. I had gone a few years without winning and then I had a new coach and we were really focused on performing my absolute best, practicing that in the free surfs, pushing my surfing way more and being alright with making mistakes or falling on waves - not being afraid of making mistakes because a mistake can lead to an opportunity. So just finding that flow and that rhythm. That was the mental switch that helped me. And then once I felt that and got the confidence of knowing I could do it, it just kind of steam rolled from there. "

BroBible: "What's something surfing fans might be surprised to learn about you?"

Griffin: "I feel like I'm quite spiritual. There's a lot that goes on in life and I think it's really fun to explore our human potential and what's possible in the world when we put our mind and heart to something."

BroBible: "What are some Quiksilver items you never leave for a surf trip without?"

Griffin Colapinto: "My backpack, of course and then their clothes and designs are really cool. They're fashionable so I can wear them wherever I go. And the boardshorts, of course. That's the main one. My board shorts. I never leave without my boardshorts."

BroBible: "Are there any waves that are currently not on tour that you'd like to see get an event in the future?"

Griffin: "There's a wave in Indonesia called Keramas that was on tour once, but it's not on there anymore. I really enjoyed that spot. It's really good for high performance surfing, so if they could bring that back, that'd be pretty cool."

BroBible: "What are some of the more underrated surfing destinations the general public might not know about?"

Griffin Colapinto: "Panama has some pretty rad waves. There's a few hidden spots in Indonesia that are still pretty low key like the Telo Islands. There's another place called the Marshall Islands that is super underground that has some pretty rad waves."

BroBible: "If you didn't become a professional surfer what do you think you would've gone on to do in life instead?"

Griffin: "At the time when I decided to start competing as a surfer, I also had a lot of friends that were doing motorbike competitions. I was almost thinking about buying a motorbike and then my dad was like, 'Why don't you try this surf contest?' I tried that and I made the final in my first one so I was instantly like, 'Ah, I'm good at this!'"

BroBible: "Thinking back to your grom days, could you ever have imagined you'd have your own signature collection with Quiksilver?"

Griffin: "Wow, yea I never thought about that. One of my favorite surfers ever was Julian Wilson and he rode for Quiksilver and Red Bull at the time. He made this movie, Scratching The Surface, and that was my favorite movie of all time and it made him one of my favorite surfers. I remember wanting to be exactly like him and it's crazy because I literally have the same sponsors as him now. I'm living my childhood dream, which is so cool.

BroBible: "What has been the biggest 'holy s -- , was that real?' moment for you in surfing?"

Griffin Colapinto: "The one that comes in my head first is when I got a perfect 10 in my first championship tour event at Snapper Rocks in Australia. I got three barrels on one wave. It was my first big event, so that was probably my biggest 'holy s -- -' moment!"
