Green Innovation Workshop highlights energy efficiency tips for Ky. businesses

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - With Kentucky on a temperature rollercoaster the past few weeks, many might be concerned about their thermostat changes showing up on their electric bill.

Bluegrass Greensource partnered up with the Appalachian company, The Mountain Association, for Friday's Green Innovation Workshop showing local business owners how to not only be energy efficient but sustainable as well.

"A lot of times, energy efficiency does correlate with money-saving," said Rachel Skinner, business outreach coordinator for Bluegrass Greensource. "While that is a fantastic perk of talking about energy efficiency, it also gets them in that space and provides them the platform to talk about sustainability on a larger scale."

Fifteen different businesses were present, including representatives from Rumpke, LG&E KU and Rupp Arena.

Attendees learned more about DIY efficiency measures to keep utility bills from having unexpected spikes.

"We come at energy efficiency from a cost standpoint," said Carrie Ray, director of energy programs at The Mountain Association. "In order to lower your bills, you first got to know what you are spending. If you make investments in energy efficiency or even renewable energy - that's more money in your pocket over the long term"

Bluegrass Greensource also offers home energy workshops for those worried about personal efficiency - sending attendees home with LED bulbs, tubes of caulk and water faucet modifiers to reduce your energy use in a sustainable way.

"Everything we are doing is somehow related to sustainability. Whether it's water, waste, or in this case, energy," Skinner said. "We are learning how to create a better planet for future generations and learning how to create a better bluegrass moving forward."

One thing you can do is to keep an eye on your thermostat when we get big swings in temperature: try to not change your thermostat by more than two degrees at a time.

It is also a good idea to check your windows and doors for cracks of any colder air infiltrating your home. Click here for more sustainable practices.
