Bali swallowed as horror floods take over

Wild rainfall resulting in floods around some of the most popular corners of Bali has caused chaos for tourists and locals alike, with water filling the streets and even bringing down a building.

Videos circulating on social media shows cars floating down roadways, flooded rivers and waterways engulfing entire streets and panicked locals wading through chest-deep water as the popular island suffered a massive downpour over the past 24 hours.

The worst of the rain fell on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning local time, causing roadways to come to a standstill and damaging property. The worst area hit, according to local reports, is around Denpasar.

Video circulating on social media platforms shows a number of main roads blocked off by floodwaters, with vehicles stranded and even turned over in Jalan Sulawesi near the Tukad Badung bridge.

Local media NusaBali.com shared footage from Karangasem, where the heavy rainfall triggered landslides that blocked access to several areas. The online news agency also shared chilling footage of a three-storey building next to BCA Denpasar on the bank of the River Badung collapsing into the flood waters.

Local media Bali Express spoke to a man who claimed to be a relative of the family who worked and lived in the collapsed building.

Rizal Husain, 63, said four members of his family were among those in the building -- who have not been accounted for.

"Two shops collapsed, Centrum and Taslim. My family was inside the Centrum shophouse," he told the publication.

"They slept there, but upstairs there was a bedroom and the back was the kitchen."

The publication claims Mr Husain's relatives within the Centrum shophouse included a grandmother named Maimunah, 75, who is Mr Husain's older sister, Maimunah's daughter and son-in-law, Nadira, 47, and Muis, 50, and Maimunah's granddaughter, Khusay, 23.

The Bali Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of extreme weather ahead of the downpour, suggesting the weather system had the potential to create moderate to heavy rain, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

In a statement, BMKG said the mass amount of rain was influenced by the active atmospheric waves known as Rossby Waves.

As reported by Bali Express, the equatorial Rossby wave is an atmospheric wave that "moves westward around the equator. When active, these waves increase the growth of rain clouds in the areas they pass through."

"This Rossby wave triggers the formation of a convergence area or the gathering of rain clouds in the areas it passes through, including Bali," explained the Bali Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in a post on its social media, noting from Wednesday afternoon local time the rainfall trend is predicted to begin decreasing.

An Australian man who posts under the TikTok handle @thetravelfoodguy described the weather as "the biggest storm" he'd experienced in Bali in 10 years.

"It has not stopped raining for two days," he told his 13k followers.

"The thunder last night, I woke up from the noise and I could actually hear the glass doors shaking in my room. My wife thought there was going to be an earthquake.

"The weather is actually insane. Normally we don't have this at this time of year."

The BMKG said several rivers have overflowed in the past 24 hours, including the Tukad Badung River near Badung Market in Denpasar, causing flooding in residential areas such as Pura Demak in West Denpasar.

The Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said while the flooding had hit some regions harder -- most of the island had been impacted by the rainfall.

"Almost all of Bali [is flooded]. The height varies, even some two-storey houses are submerged (with a height of) 2-3 metres," said the Secretary of the BPBD, Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, as reported by Indonesian media Kumparan.
