Winners named for Nunavut Sport and Recreation Awards

Nunavut's annual Sport and Recreation Awards will recognize athletes, organizers and community builders on Oct. 4.

The ceremony is being hosted by the Recreation Parks Association, Nunavut Sport Federation and the Department of Community Services at the Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Centre in Iqaluit.

The Male Athlete of the Year goes to Iqaluit speed skater Miles Brewster, won a gold medal at the 2024 Arctic Winter Games.

Ivalu Leishman-Brocklebank, from Chesterfield Inlet, will receive the Female Athlete of the Year after earning a gold medal in the head pull (junior division) at the 2024 Arctic Winter Games.

Coach of the Year goes to Martine Dupont, of Iqaluit, who is the head coach of the Nunavut Speed Skating Association.

Iqaluit's Charles Lagace in will take home the Administrator of the Year award for serving as vice-president of Judo Nunavut.

A hockey team from Arviat -- the U18 Kivalliq Canucks -- captured Team of the Year.

The Special Recognition Award for outstanding contribution to sport has multiple winners: Nunavut Basketball Association's Abbas Parks from Pond Inlet, Jon Lindell Memorial Calm Air Cup organizer Gleason Uppahuak from Arviat, Nunavut Speed Skating Association vice-president Sherri Young in Iqaluit, and posthumously to badminton player Jon Tassugat in Pangnirtung.

The Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut also offers two awards for community contributions.

The Calm Air Youth Leader Award of Excellence will be given to Naja Pearce, who co-founded the Inuit Games Club in Iqaluit.

Recreation Leader of the Year is reserved for Arviat recreation coordinator Jolene Kigusiutnar.
