Next opponent for Canelo Alvarez or Terence Crawford confirmed after dominant stoppage victory - The Sport Review

The winner of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Terence Crawford already has a mandated opponent next after a dominant stoppage victory last night.

On 13 September, the most anticipated fight of the year takes place in Las Vegas as Canelo defends his undisputed super middleweight titles against Crawford in a pound-for-pound clash.

The Mexican champion has employed a secret sparring weapon, Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, to help him prepare for the switch-hitting of 'Bud', which the title challenger is happy about, as he knows he is taking the fight seriously.

It will be the first time Omaha's own competes in the 168 lb weight class, after his brief trip to super welterweight ended with a successful title win where he was pushed to the limit by Uzbek Israil Madrimov.

While the two-weight division jump has led to some predicting a loss for the American, some believe he may be able to 'bully' Alvarez if he implements the game plan he used to beat Errol Spence Jr.

But what happens next after the Netflix super-fight has been part of discussions for this contest, with rumours intimating Crawford will retire, whatever the result of the bout.

Canelo is more likely to continue competing at the highest level, as he has never let losses such as the Dmitry Bivol defeat derail his career.

Whoever comes out victorious, though, will be immediately mandated to face the new IBF mandatory challenger, Osleys Iglesias, who secured his position with a dominant eighth-round stoppage of Vladimir Shishkin.

Iglesias has been a rising prospect in the super middleweight division, with the Cuban putting his mark on the world stage with an impressive record of 14 wins and 13 knockouts.

His impressive performance against Shishkin is now his marquee win, which means he will be on the radar of the world's top 10.

'El Tornado' has now booked himself a fight for the IBF world title, and it could potentially be against the winner of the super-fight.

However, if either fighter does not accept a matchup with Iglesias, they will have to vacate the title, and the Cuban will fight for the vacant belt against another ranked fighter.

Alvarez has had to face an IBF champion as recently as May, when he fought William Scull to once again become the undisputed champion.

Scull had beaten Shishkin to pick up the vacant title but unsuccessfully defended the belt against the 35-year-old Mexican in a fight that produced a historically unwanted statistic.

Their bout set a new Compubox record for the fewest combined punches thrown (445) in a 12-round fight in the 40-year history of the statistic tracker.

Saul Alvarez complained after the contest that the Cuban Scull was not trying to win and that it was a 'boring' fight.
