Morocco set a new record at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, claiming the biggest victory in tournament history with a 16-0 thumping of New Caledonia on Sunday.
Scoring their first goal in the third minute and their last in the 90th, Morocco had 10 different scorers in the match. U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Player of the Tournament Abdellah Ouazane, Oualid Ibn Salah, Abdelali Eddaoudi, Ziyad Baha, Nahel Haddani, and Ismail El Aoud each netted braces.
Bilal Soukrat, Ilyas Hidaoui, and Zakari El Khalfioui netted one goal each, and Steevy Andrew netted an own goal.
The previous record was held by Spain, who defeated New Zealand 13-0 in the 1997 edition in Egypt.
Despite the historic win, the Young Atlas Lions have struggled at this year's tournament. They sit third in group B with three points from their three group games. Morocco fell to Japan 2-0 in its tournament opener and lost to Portugal 6-0. Both sides have booked their places in the knockout stage as the top two teams in the group.
The Young Atlas Lions will hope to finish as one of the best third-placed teams in group play in order to advance to the next round of the tournament and await their fate as the group stage wraps up.
