City Hall Evacuated After Small Fire During City Council Meeting

CITY HALL -- A small fire forced the evacuation of City Hall in the middle of a City Council meeting Wednesday.

Several streets surrounding City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., remain closed by police as of 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, as firefighters deal with the fire on the Cook County side of the building.

The fire alarm went off inside City Hall about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the middle of a City Council meeting -- a few minutes after alderpeople deferred Mayor Brandon Johnson's 2025 budget proposal, which could be voted on Friday.

Firefighters responding to the scene and "quickly" put out the fire, which was confined to a records storage area of the building, according to a Chicago Fire Department social media post.

"[Emergency medical services are] checking out a couple people," the post said.

City employees, alderpeople, reporters and members of the public evacuated the building and were waiting around to go back inside.

As of 12:25 p.m., the blocks directly outside of City Hall on LaSalle, Clark and Randolph streets remain closed to traffic. Washington Street on the south side of the building is open to traffic. About 12:30 p.m., people were allowed to re-enter the building.
