[File] Suspects accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa at the High Court in Pretoria.

Accused number four in the Senzo Meyiwa trial - Mthokoziseni Maphisa - is expected to find out on Tuesday morning if charges against him will be dropped.

Maphisa is the only one out of the five accused to bring the discharge application before the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

He and four others are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa.

Defence counsel Zithulele Nxumalo says there is no evidence linking Maphisa to the murder of Meyiwa.

"According to the version of the state, the only witness who met and placed the accused at Vosloorus hostel on the 26th of October, 2014 was Constable Sizwe Zungu, who is a single witness. It is a tight law that a court should approach the evidence of a single witness with caution. Constable Zungu was not corroborated in all material respect," explains Nxumalo.

However, the state maintained that Maphisa should continue to face trial over the soccer star's murder. Rebutting Nxumalo's argument, State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi said there was enough evidence linking Maphisa to the 2014 killing.

The state believes that the two confessions by accused number 2, Bongani Ntanzi, which place all five of the accused at the scene, is sufficient.

Should Maphisa succeed, he will be acquitted. But should he not, the defence's case is expected to begin with the calling of their witnesses.
