You can see how different the harbour entrance once looked before the Pavilion was built.
This photograph was sent in some time ago for the Echo's archive by Boots Coman, from Chiswell, Portland.
As well as an empty site where the Pavilion would have been you can see steam ships there. The area certainly looks much barer than it is now!

This second old image, seen below, shows a view from Weymouth looking towards Portland which was taken in about 1950.

It was originally submitted to the Echo's archives by Portlander John Stone, who said he only got hold of the photo - as an ardent Portland fan - because it showed his beloved island from an unusual perspective.
He said: "I got the photograph from when I did work up at HMS Osprey working for the MOD. It was on the door of a naval officer, a lieutenant commander, who let me borrow it to get a copy.
"I like unusual things, I look out for things that are a bit different and having been a Portlander all my life I liked this one because it showed it in a different light."
Mr Stone did not know the exact date of the photo but the Ritz theatre that burned down in 1954 is still there, as is the intricate railway system.
"I think it is probably from the early 1950s," he said. "The Ritz is still there and there are all the big boats in the harbour so I think it was around that time."
