Twin Swap: Trever Nehls Launches Texas Congressional Bid Moments After Brother Troy Exits

It took less than sixty minutes for the future of Texas's 22nd Congressional District to become a family affair on Saturday. Shortly after U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls announced he would retire from the House, his twin brother, Trever Nehls, launched a campaign to replace him.

Rep. Troy Nehls, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, publicized his decision to leave Congress in a post on X, noting that he had already called the President to inform him of the move. Before the dust could settle, Trever Nehls took to Facebook to declare his intent to seek the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by his sibling.

"I am honored to announce my candidacy for Congressional District 22 to continue fighting for the people of this district," Trever Nehls wrote.

The announcement signals a potential continuation of the Nehls brand in the district, with Trever leaning heavily on his brother's record and their shared alignment with the "America First" agenda. In his statement, Trever praised his brother's "integrity, courage, and a relentless commitment to public safety," promising to maintain that momentum in Washington.

"District 22 needs a Representative who will follow in Troy's footsteps and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure the border, protect our families, and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to press upon the American people," Trever stated.

While the brothers share a background in law enforcement and military service, Trever Nehls has faced electoral headwinds in recent years. According to Ballotpedia, he narrowly lost a bid for Fort Bend County sheriff in 2020 and was defeated in the race for Fort Bend County judge in 2022. He previously served as the constable for Fort Bend County Precinct 4.

"I know this district. And, this district knows me," Trever said, adding that he intends to work daily to earn the trust of voters.

The shift in District 22 is part of a wider shake-up among the Texas Republican delegation. According to reporting from Roll Call, several other GOP representatives are departing the House. Reps.

Morgan Luttrell, Jodey C. Arrington, and Michael McCaul are retiring, while Rep. Wesley Hunt is challenging Sen. John Cornyn in the primary, and Rep. Chip Roy is pursuing the nomination for state attorney general.
