Gov. Kathy Hochul and Orange Co. Exec. Steve Neuhaus address the status of the Jennings Creek fire in Greenwood Lake
Residents of Edgemere Avenue in Warwick, Orange County, are being encouraged to evacuate their homes Saturday after flames from the Jennings Creek wildfire, primarily located in Sterling Forest State Park, jumped containment lines and inched closer to a residential area.
Conditions caused by winds caused fire to breach its containment line Saturday night near Edgemere Avenue, New York State Park Police posted in an update to social media at around 8:30 p.m.
"Out of an abundance of caution, an evacuation plan was put into effect," the post reads. "The voluntary evacuation is for approximately 35 houses."
Warwick Town Supervisor Jesse Dwyer posted a request for residents on Edgemere Avenue to evacuate at around 8 p.m. to social media.
"Residents north of 42 Edgemere may evacuate by their personal vehicles," Dwyer posted. "However, residents from 32 to 42 Edgemere will be provided transportation out by a Warwick Dial a Bus."
The evacuation site is Greenwood Lake Middle School (1247 Lakes Rd.) "Pets are welcome at the shelter," Dwyer's post reads.
"Please be advised, there is time to leave," He said. "However, we will have to move much more fire apparatus in the area and we do not want too much congestion if things get worse."
Earlier Saturday evening, Dwyer posted that residents of Wah Ta Wah should "continue to be on watch,"
"Please be prepared and await further instructions," he said.
Leadership from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers were working with local law enforcement to conduct orderly and safe evacuations, the post said. Fire suppression efforts are expected to continue over night into Sunday.
Warwick is about 20 miles west of Rockland County.
