Raleigh, N.C. -- Hockey fans are going to have to learn how to spell 'Canes' without Necas.
Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Eric Tulsky pulled off a blockbuster trade that will send forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury away to the Colorado Avalanche for dynamic forward Mikko Rantanen. The Chicago Blackhawks are the third team in the deal and they're sending Taylor Hall to Raleigh.
Rantanen is one of the league's most talented scorers with 25 goals and 39 assists in 49 games this season.
Both Rantanen and Hall are on expiring contracts and could hit free agency at the end of this season if the Hurricanes don't sign them to an extension.
The Blackhawks receive a 2025 3rd Round Pick (their own returned from Carolina) and will pay half of Rantanen's salary.
Along with Necas and Drury the Avalanche receive a 2025 2nd Round Pick and a 2026 4th Round Pick.
Necas has had a productive season himself, notching 16 goals and 39 assists in 49 games this season for the Canes.
Drury has scored three goals with six assists this season.
