Coming into this season, the Wayzata volleyball team would have been happy with one victory over arch rival Armstrong.
This week the Trojans are celebrating a season sweep of the Falcons after a three games to one victory on Thursday, Sept. 30.
Strong blocking at the net by the Trojans and poor passing from the back row by the Falcons were crucial in the 19-25, 28-26, 25-18, 25-13 victory for the Trojans.
It was the Falcons who started strong in game one behind the play of outside hitters Mary Wilson and Megan Norling.
Wilson tallied five kills and one ace, while Norling added four kills in the game one victory for the Falcons.
The match turned in game two as the Falcons missed an opportunity to take a two games to zero lead.
After kills by Wilson and Rebecca Zenefski, the Falcons had a game point with a 25-24 lead, but couldn't convert.
The Trojans fought back on kills by Jessie Lasher and Lindsey Clairmont. They eventually won game two on Clairmont's sixth kill of the game.
The Trojans took control in game three as Clairmont and fellow middle hitter Lauren Baufield started to dominate play at the net.
Clairmont and Baufield had a hand in 11 of the Trojans' game three points with either a kill or a block.
The Trojans centered their block on Norling, who leads the Falcons in kills this year.
"We've been working hard on our blocking because we think it's a strength for our team," Jackson said. "We definitely have the kids physical enough to do it and I thought it was a difference maker in the match."
In game four, the Falcons lost Zenefski to an ankle injury after she collided with Norling during a point. The Falcons never recovered after that as strong play by Clairmont, Lasher and Meg Maguire led the Trojans to the game four victory.
Clairmont led all players in the match with 16 kills and six blocks and was virtually unstoppable when given a good set.
"She came alive during the match and that's a product of Chelsea [Leines] setting the ball to her and the girls passing the ball to Chelsea," Jackson said.
Clairmont has been the consistent contributor this season for the Trojans, but players around her are stepping up into their roles. Clairmont said that all the parts are starting to click.
"We started out a little unsure and a little inexperienced, and we just grew together so quickly," Clairmont said. "I feel like we've been on an up-swing all season and we're only going up from here."
The Trojans are now 12-2 overall on the season and they control their own destiny in the Classic Lake Conference.
The Trojans are 7-1 in conference play with Minnetonka on their heels at 6-1. The Trojans and Skippers will meet for the second time this season on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the match that could decide the conference title.
This week, however, the Trojans will concern themselves with road matches at St. Louis Park on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and at Apple Valley on Thursday, Oct. 7.
