If recent history is any indication, Friday's 5A Division I state semifinal between Denton Ryan and Highland Park might determine a state champion.
The last three winners of the matchup between the Raiders (13-1) and Scots (13-1) have gone on to win it all. Can it be a fourth time for the winner of this semifinal, taking place Friday night at The Star in Frisco? We're about to find out.

Denton Ryan comes in 7-3 all-time in state semifinal games. All three losses have been to Highland Park.
The Raiders come in with a propensity for running the ball, averaging 223.8 rushing yards per game. Last week, Ryan ran for 206 yards in the Raiders' 31-21 regional title win against defending two-time state champion Aledo.
Ryan also makes sure its foes don't run against the Raiders, as they have allowed 85.1 rushing yards per contest.
Highland Park comes into Friday's semifinal with one of the more potent offenses in the area. The Scots are averaging 37.2 points and 403 yards a game, and they have scored at least 30 points in each of their last 12 contests.
But the Scots also come in with a stout defense, having given up 16.1 points and 254.9 yards a game.
