When the nominees for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards are announced early Monday, the witches of Oz could reign supreme.
"Wicked" appears poised to sweep up a slew of nominations, including best musical or comedy film. It's likely to be joined in that category by acclaimed recent releases such as "Anora," "Emilia Pérez" and "A Real Pain." ("Wicked" was distributed by Universal Pictures, a unit of NBC News' parent company, NBCUniversal.)
In the best drama film race, front-runners include the Vatican-set thriller "Conclave," the architecture-themed postwar epic "The Brutalist" and the science fiction spectacle "Dune: Part Two." ("Conclave" was distributed by Focus Features, another unit of NBCUniversal.)
Globes voters, unlike their counterparts at the Oscars, honor achievement in television, too. In the races for best comedy and drama series, expect to see critical favorites like ABC's "Abbott Elementary," Max's "Hacks" and FX's "Shōgun." (The latter two shows claimed top honors at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September.)
The nominees across 27 categories are set to be announced around 8:15 a.m. ET by actors Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. The awards telecast is scheduled for Jan. 5 live on CBS and the streaming service Paramount+, with stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser set to host.
In addition to the usual procession of trophies and speeches, this year's Globes will honor small-screen mainstay Ted Danson with the Carol Burnett Award, a prize recognizing someone who has "made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen."
Danson is a three-time Globes victor best known for his roles on NBC's "Cheers," CBS' "Becker" and HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm." He currently stars on Netflix's "A Man on the Inside," which could pick up nods in the Globes' best series categories.
