The 2025 CIF State Wrestling Championships got underway Thursday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
Four Inland boys wrestlers in their respective weight classes advanced to the quarterfinals, which will be held Friday afternoon.
North's Coby Merrill, the top-seeded heavyweight, continued his postseason dominance with three more quick victories via pinfall. Merrill's wins Thursday came over Jacob Ruacho of Fresno Central (41 seconds), Isaac Le of San Francisco Burton (7 seconds) and Troy Ceja of Turlock Pitman (33 seconds). Merrill's longest match during this postseason has been 49 seconds.
Merrill will face No. 9-seeded Noah Larios of Imperial in the quarterfinals.
Temecula Valley's Justice El Sayad joined Merrill in the heavyweight quarterfinals. The No. 6-seeded El Sayad advanced with wins over Reegan Dunton of Susanville Lassen (6-1 decision) and Brandon Bass of Servite (7-3 decision). El Sayad faces No. 3-seeded Daniel Moylan of Poway in the quarterfinals.
Chino's Zachary Samano, seeded fourth at 113 pounds, advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Evan Cavazos of Reedley Immanuel (10-0 major decision), Damian Arreola of El Cajon Granite Hills (17-2 technical fall) and Massimo Ortiz of Servite (13-2 major decision. Samano faces No. 4-seeded Max Murillo is the quarterfinals. Murillo wrestled last season at Canyon Springs.
Etiwanda's Jacob Bell, seeded No. 7 in the 150-pound bracket, had an opening-round walkover and reached the quarterfinals with a 7-1 decision over Roman Gutierrez of Fresno Bullard. Bell faces No. 2-seeded Ivan Arias of Clovis Buchanan in the quarterfinals.
The consolation rounds begin Friday morning, and 34 other Inland wrestlers will be competing there to keep their seasons alive
