'We would have won': Claridge frustrated by injuries in Boro defeat

STEVE Claridge believes his Weymouth side 'would have won' had they not been hampered with a string of injuries against Gosport Bourgh on Wednesday night.

The Terras boss was left to wonder what he needs to do to catch a break as three players went down injured at Privett Park as his side lost 4-3.

With an already small squad missing the injured Euan Pollock and Charlie Betts, who was playing for his parent club in the FA Youth Cup, injuries to Oakley Hange, Reuben Reid and Matty Burrows turned the game.

Weymouth had dominated the opening 20 minutes against their rivals from Hampshire and were leading 1-0 after Andy Robinson's early strike.

They even had a chance to go 2-0 up but Brandon Goodship penalty was well saved by Ryan Hall before injuries changed the game.

A brace from Michael Fernandes and a goal from Trevor Caborn stunned the Terras at the end of the first half before Ethan Taylor added a fourth early in the second half.

Weymouth fought back though with Barney Stone and Ben Moss both finding their first league goals for the club.

But Claridge's side could not find an equaliser, no matter how hard they tried.

When asked by Ben Ashelford in a post match interview if the injuries played a key part in the result, Claridge said: "Yeah. I would say that it is a game we would have won. People may disagree, I don't care, it's a game we would have won.

"For 20 mins we are the better side and we missed a penalty to go 2-0 up and that is a massive point in the game and then obviously you get the injuries.

"To be 4-1 down and to come back, we really should have got something out of the game, all credit to them (his players), there is a real good spirit, and I said after the game I really feel for the players."

"We should have at least another nine points if it hadn't been for circumstance. Not that teams are better than us or lost games because we are not good enough but because we have not had an ounce of luck anywhere."

Claridge was also asked about Weymouth's lack of shots on target with Gosport forced to field left back Rory Williams between the sticks after keeper Hall injured himself saving the penalty.

The Terras boss continued: "We didn't work him did we, 10 minutes to go we had three or four chances to put the ball in the box and actually ask a few questions and we have over hit it or it's gone straight down his throat but to be fair he hasn't had a save to make.

"Apart from goals that have gone in, i can't actually remember us testing him which was probably the slightly disappointing part."

Despite defeat Claridge was looking at the positives and was pleased with performances from young winger Ben Moss and the club's latest signing Mickey Morgan.

When asked about Moss's performance, he said: "I like Ben anyway and it was a bit unfair putting him at left back the other day but yet again we didn't have any real option but I like him and I think that's why we have kept him around. At left wing i thought he did alright.

"I thought Mickey did okay second half as well. Better on the right than he was on the left.

"So we are learning things and there are positives. We could have easily have given up at 4-1 and we didn't and even their manager said we should have got something out of it."
