While established long ago as a fruit, most wouldn't think of tomatoes as an option to ferment into wine. Apparently Pizza Hut disagrees.
This week the pizza chain announced the launch of a "a pizza wine," which it describes as "a unique, limited-edition tomato wine that captures the essence of your favorite slice in every sip."
The Tomato Wine by Pizza Hut is made with tomatoes and infused with basil, created in partnership with Irvine's Just Beyond Paradise Winery in Kansas. While the wine also tastes of herbs and spices, along with toasted oak, "reminiscent of a perfectly baked pizza crust," the brand also notes the alcoholic libation tastes similar to a white wine once chilled.
"The holidays are a time for many gatherings, but often the gift of a bottle of wine can feel expected. Why not be the one to bring the pizza party with the gift of pizza wine ... designed to ignite fun and conversation?" said Pizza Hut's Director of Advertising, Elyse Slayton, in the announcement.
The wine will not be available in stores, but only at www.irvinewinery.com/pizzahut, available for $25 each bottle (with a minimum order of two). The chain is offering the wine as part of a limited edition gift set (for customers 21 years of age and older), which also includes two Pizza Hut branded wine glasses and a wine opener for $60. The Triple Treat Box is an online only promo, and can be purchased on www.pizzahut.com or through the Pizza Hut app.
