'Fans deserve more' - Coach demands response after bruising weekend

Invicta Dynamos' head coach wants his team to repay their fans after last weekend's disappointment.

The Mos lost 4-1 at Streatham Redhawks and followed up with a 7-0 home defeat against the same side the next day.

Karl Lennon's outfit are at home this Saturday against Cardiff Fire and visit Chelmsford Chieftains on Sunday.

"We have to have a reaction," he said. "There's just no question about it.

"A game at home is our opportunity to repay some of the fans who put their hands in their pockets on Sunday and paid to watch their heroes play the sport that they love to play.

"I don't think we gave them that fair showing on Sunday, at least. Saturday was a bit different, but Sunday especially was not good.

"We need to put in a performance over the two games this weekend. If we want to improve, we have to be focused.

"We've not had a good run against Chelmsford in performances, either, and Sunday presents us with an opportunity to do that to the best of our ability."

The Mos were up against it at Streatham last Saturday after conceding early.

Lennon said: "We had to get through the first barrage of intensity, which always comes when you play there. If you can ride that out, you normally put yourself in a really good spot.

"But we conceded a very sloppy goal right off the bat, which was so frustrating. After that scare, we played pretty well for the following 40 minutes.

"It was a really tight and close game and we had a really good chance in the third period. Aaron [Connolly] had a shot off the goalie's shoulder and popped over the net. If it goes in, it's 1-1 but then what ends up happening, inevitably, is that the puck gets taken out of the offensive zone and back towards ours and they score."

The Mos lost Oli Bronnimann to injury in the game and also missed experienced forward Andy Smith (illness).

"We were depleted," said Lennon. "We tried to shuffle things around [on Sunday] to see if we could make things work offensively because that was something that we needed to produce on.

"We had some really great opportunities in the first period where we put them under pressure and somewhat against the run [of play], there was a tip on a shot that was going nowhere near the net, and it went in. Then we're chasing again.

"I said to the boys before the game, 'We've been down in every single game that we've played this year, regardless of whether we've won. We can't be in that situation chasing all the time'.

"They moved the puck really nicely and the better team won out on the night, without question. They were way better than we were over the weekend.

"We just didn't deliver on what we'd set out and a lot of the failures were very fundamental failures in hockey. If you can't manage space well in your zone and you can't clear the puck and you can't do all these other things, then it doesn't matter what line you put out, what tactic you put on the board."

Lennon's side were still well backed, home and away, which the coach really appreciated.

"Our fans are ridiculous," he said. "Even just at the end of the game on Sunday they were still encouraging the group.

"There was probably 40 or 50 of them that showed up and watched the game in Streatham. They didn't stop singing the whole way through and I think perspective is important. Fifty minutes in, it's 1-0. It's only in that last few minutes where it changed."

"Everybody in that building knew that on that night it wasn't a comfortable watch for a Streatham fan. It was a pretty intense and close game on both parts. But when you see the scoreline, it's not reflective of that.

"After the game, they were unreal with their unwavered support. But I don't really expect anything less from them.

"That's the way they've always been and the way they'll always be. I'm eternally grateful for that. That's where I think the failure on Sunday becomes even more upsetting, really, because they don't deserve that.

"They put a lot of effort and intensity into the team. They deserve better, ultimately, and they didn't get it. We've got to do more than that."
