As of September 16, 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is confronting a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Kasai Province. This marks the country's 16th recorded epidemic of the deadly virus, raising concerns about public health and regional stability.
The outbreak is believed to have originated from a new spillover event - meaning the virus jumped from an animal reservoir to a human host - rather than being a resurgence of a previously contained epidemic. The first confirmed case was a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to a hospital on August 20, 2025, and tragically died five days later. The situation quickly escalated as two healthcare workers who were involved in her care afterward contracted the virus and also succumbed to the disease.
As of today, September 16, 2025, health authorities have reported 81 confirmed cases of Ebola and a devastating 28 deaths.Critically, four of those deaths are among healthcare workers, highlighting the significant risk faced by frontline responders.
